The good part is our process.

The truly pitiful part is that this charlatan, along with the rest of the progressives in this once great nation, was able to convince millions of Americans that they're nothing without him.

We've already lived in the best of times.

Our country cannot succeed when a shrinking few do very well and a growing many barely make it.

The commitments we make to each other — through Medicare, and Medicaid, and Social Security — these things do not sap our initiative; they strengthen us. They do not make us a nation of takers; they free us to take the risks that make this country great.

Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law — for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well. Our journey is not complete until no citizen is forced to wait for hours to exercise the right to vote. Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity.

Some may still deny the overwhelming judgment of science, but none can avoid the devastating impact of raging fires, and crippling drought, and more powerful storms. The path towards sustainable energy sources will be long and sometimes difficult. But America cannot resist this transition; we must lead it.

Our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherished, and always safe from harm.

2013 Index of Economic Freedom: U.S. Declines for Fifth Straight Year

Food stamp enrollment has skyrocketed from 32 million in January 2009 to 48 million today, and median household income has declined from $51,190 to $50,054. America had never witnessed a trillion-dollar budget deficit, but now we’ve suffered four in a row under Barack Obama. Economic growth also remains lethargic, with GDP increases far below what we’ve come to expect following a recession. Growth for 2012 averaged just 2.1% according to the latest federal data, as compared to 7.75% growth in 1983 following a recession of similar magnitude.

The Randians that opie destroyed in the essay he posted on an earlier thread will NOT like this. I think this was the key paragraph in his speech.

We, the people, still believe that every citizen deserves a basic measure of security and dignity. We must make the hard choices to reduce the cost of health care and the size of our deficit. But we reject the belief that America must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future. For we remember the lessons of our past, when twilight years were spent in poverty, and parents of a child with a disability had nowhere to turn. We do not believe that in this country, freedom is reserved for the lucky, or happiness for the few. We recognize that no matter how responsibly we live our lives, any one of us, at any time, may face a job loss, or a sudden illness, or a home swept away in a terrible storm. The commitments we make to each other – through Medicare, and Medicaid, and Social Security – these things do not sap our initiative; they strengthen us. They do not make us a nation of takers; they free us to take the risks that make this country great.

And it was a slap in the face of the people who believe this was an election where the "takers" won. It's not true and he articulated it very well, with far more power than he did during the campaign.

As I watched the speech, I could see how he was articulating the progressive view of the country. Not an anti-capitalist view as some claim, but as something pragmatic. When you see some of the comments by people here, you notice that they forget those are their fellow Americans they hate so much.

hb can count said...

Fine Paul. What is your solution?

Austerity.

It has pushed Great Britain into a double dip recession.

The only country where it has had any success is Canada, but the energy production there made up the difference. Throughout Europe, the nations that followed the austerity path are all in far worse shape than we are.

They are worst off because they went further down the social-welfare path than we did, not because of "austerity".

That double-dip recession would have happen regardless of the austerity measures taken. They were already that far into the debt crisis.

It would have been far worst if they had a huge defense establishment on top of that.

Typical of the liberal to blame "austerity measures" rather than the fiscal crisis that necessitated them in the first place.

REACTIONS TO OBAMA'S SECOND INAUGURAL ADDRESS
ANDREW SULLIVAN: "If you have long believed, as I have, that this man could easily become the liberal Reagan by the end of his second term... then this speech will not have surprised you."

JAMES FALLOWS: "I was expecting an anodyne tone-poem about healing national wounds, surmounting partisanship, and so on. As has often been the case, Obama confounded expectations -- mine, at least. Four years ago, when people were expecting a barn-burner, the newly inaugurated president Obama gave a deliberately downbeat, sober-toned presentation about the long challenges ahead. Now -- well, it's almost as if he has won re-election and knows he will never have to run again and hears the clock ticking on his last chance to say what he cares about. If anyone were wondering whether Obama wanted to lower expectations for his second term ... no, he apparently does not."

EZRA KLEIN: "In his first term, Obama changed policy. In his second, he wants to change minds."

CHRIS CILLIZZA: "This was a speech that could only be given by someone who knew that he would never have to run for re-election again... This was Obama unbound. Distill Obama's speech to a single sentence and that sentence is: 'I'm the president, deal with it.'"

TA-NEHISI COATES: "There was a time when merely stating the ideas Obama put forth would have gotten you killed."

MATTHEW CONTINETTI: "It is of course possible that the inauguration of a reelected president is his moment of maximum triumph. It is of course possible that Obama's second term may turn out like George W. Bush's, when the lyricism and passion of the second inaugural collided with the realities of strategic miscalculations and unexpected events. I have my doubts. WHAT I DO NOT DOUBT IS THAT THE GENERATION OF CONSERVATIVES AND REPUBLICANS WHO RETURN ONE DAY TO PWER WILL BE FORCED TO RECKON WITH THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE OBAMA REVOLUTION, just as a generation of defeated liberals were forced to confront and in some cases accept the revolution of Ronald Reagan."

We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries. We must claim its promise. That’s how we will maintain our economic vitality and our national treasure, our forests and waterways, our crop lands and snow capped peaks. That is how we will preserve our planet, commanded to our care by God. That’s what will lend meaning to the creed our fathers once declared.

James, the most telling comment I have seen, and not only from what you quoted, was that Obama will be a President of consequence and the Republicans in the future will have to deal with that reality.

Right now they are in denial. From the twitterings of "Pathological Liar" to "Worst President Ever" and beyond, the truth is, agree with Obama or not they will have to accept he changed the country.

Now only history will judge whether or not the changes were beneficial, I think they will be, that's why I voted for him. But he has the opportunity to go into the history books as a very important leader.

Nothing is guaranteed. Outside events could change it. But I just don't see him as a second term failure, like Bush was.

I love it when conservatives actually use their god given brain, unlike the righties here.

Joe Scarborough said on Sunday that Republicans owe their majority in the House of Representatives to gerrymandering.

The MSNBC host was part of the roundtable on "Meet the Press." He lamented the loss of the Republican party's popular appeal, and recalled how William F. Buckley criticized certain elements of the conservative movement.

"That has to happen again with this party because it’s getting smaller and smaller," Scarborough said. "In this debate, we actually have conservative thinkers, talking about Ronald Reagan being a RINO — a Republican in name only, because he supported an assault weapons ban. They keep pushing themselves closer and closer to the cliff."

Then he said, "But I just have to say one other really important point, because I made a mistake over the past month talking about how Republicans have also won a majority in the House. As this article I was referencing mentioned, we actually got a minority of votes nationwide in House races. It was just gerrymandering from 2010 that gave us the majority."

Gretchen Carlson introduced Winget who she teased was about to explain for the viewers that “if you’re upset, you have no one to blame but yourself.” Wonderful.

Winget’s advice includes educating yourself, by reading one or more of his own books, and being honest with yourself about your own painful shortcomings. Winget was last seen on Fox & Friends in May of last year delivering history’s most depressing graduation speech for the America’s college graduates.

If you are indeed suffering from “blue Monday” syndrome, it is probably safe to assume that a stiff bourbon is a more reliable remedy for depression than today’s episode of Fox & Friends.

BRIT HUME: President Obama today gave the country a clarifying moment. We may not have gotten to know Mr. Obama, the man, better today, but we certainly got to know him the politician better. His inaugural speech should put to rest for all time the notion much favored by his admirers in the press that he is a centrist. He is not. He looked out to his west today across a country still suffering the after effects of a severe recession and said only that a recovery had begun. And his prescription for accelerating that anemic recovery? None was heard.

He barely mentioned the national debt up about 60 percent since he took office, and then only as a prelude to defending the three great drivers of that debt: Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. He did call it quote “fiction” that all societies' ills could be cured through government alone, but that was just a prelude to wonders of collective action by which he unmistakably meant government action on gay rights, climate change, voter suppression, immigration reform, and obliquely gun control. Only by saying he would support the spread of democracy worldwide, which is the George W. Bush freedom agenda, and by failing to swear off the use of drone attacks did he say anything likely to disappoint the base on the left.

The president clearly is a man of the left, and after today, his few departures from its orthodoxy should fool no one.

No doubt Obama's agenda now. His apologist in the press can no longer ever use the terms "centrist" or "mainstream" again.

He showed himself to be a hard, uncompromising leftist.

Dan Balz: "President Obama has never lacked for confidence, but rarely has that attribute been on display as clearly as on Monday in an inaugural address that underscored the distance he has traveled after four contentious years in office. This was not the politician who campaigned in 2008 on themes of transcending the divisive politics of the past, though there were ritual calls for the country and its political leaders to seize this moment together. Instead, it was a president who has accepted the reality of those divisions and is determined to prevail ON HIS TERMS."

Now we know, Obamacare, the 2ndcoming admitted it has failed and has to be reworked.

Really funny is the admission that SS , Medicare and Food Stamps are not at all in trouble fiscally, so those are all OFF the table.

When do we see the Obamabudget , the one the calls for LOWER middle income tax rates that drop more then 5 percent, that would just about make up for the loss of income lost in the last four years of the first term.

Ette, Blind Jane will never admit she is wrong, she will however double standard the hell out of this blog.

I can prove it, James you said you receive SS checks and then you said you pay a higher earned income rate then millionaires and billionaires, you lied, I proved it and yet you do not admit you lied.

Fox News pundits Shepard Smith, Amy Stoddard narrated the initial part of the inaugural parade while the presidential motorcade slowly moved past the cheering crowd. Smith and Stoddard’s major talking-point revolved around why the president and first lady hadn’t gotten out of the car. The weather was cold, but sunny, so they should have no excuse for not getting out of that car to greet the crowd. When President Obama and Michele did get out of the car, Smith and Stoddard almost sounded disappointed, perhaps thinking their big criticism of the day had just evaporated.

A lot of analysts praised Obama’s speech for reaching out more to younger voters and throwing a wider tent to cover gay rights, people of different color and references to climate change—than any preceding inaugural speech. But true to Republican inability to adapt to a changing electorate or issues of importance beyond taxes and spending, there were many that couldn’t even take a deep breath before jumping back on their attack-Obama high-horses...

...While other channels were showing the festive parade activities, Fox News spent the time dissecting every part of Obama’s speech with a new round of critics every hour.

The battle will resume on debt ceiling issues in the coming days, but it is a shame that right-winged neocons, who are clearly still pouting from their election loss, couldn’t zip their criticism for a few hours of one single day.
Could it be from fear that giving President Obama even a hint of respect would cause their brains to implode or could it be fear that their Tea Party backers might abandon them or have they simply become so partisan that moral decency no longer exists?

I haven't seen any predictions about performance during the second 4000 day term of zerO here yet...here are a few of mine:

-War expands in the ME and North Africa...more US soldiers and drones deployed. (easy prediction under Peace Prize Pres)

-Unemployment "improves" as more give up, unemployment payments extended to infinity. FED gives indication of exiting QE...bond market plummets at least 15-20% and equity markets follow suit. Recession returns.

-Drama continues from DC on debt deficit etc...no resolution to any of it, of course.

-Those of us paying for our own insurance must declare bankruptcy as zerOcare takes hold and runs costs to the moon and beyond.

Gun sales remain robust...legal and otherwise. The MSM's sensationalism of mass attacks PROMOTES a continuing rash of attacks. OBAMA'S STRIKING COMMENTS ON GAY RIGHTS
First Read: "Maybe the most striking (and memorable) lines of Obama's inaugural speech were his remarks on gay rights. 'All of us are created equal' is the star that guides us still -- just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall,' he said. He later added, 'Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law.' It's important to remember that Obama was someone who opposed gay marriage in presidential run in '08, and who later said he was evolving on the subject. Obama's shift is a reflection of how quickly the politics of gay marriage have changed in this country. (The train was leaving the station, and Obama jumped on board.) And so is the fact that there has been little to no backlash to those remarks -- at least so far."

But it simply is a beautiful thing to see the very institutions that carry Obama's water and attempt to brainwash more of his minions, deal first-hand with the consequences of their thoughtless advocacy:

A new piece in the Wall Street Journal reports that many colleges are cutting back on the number of hours worked by adjunct professors, in order to avoid new requirements that they provide healthcare to anyone working over 30 hours per week. This is terrible news for a lot of people; 70 percent of professors work as adjuncts and many will now have to cope with a major pay cut just as requirements that they buy their own health insurance go into effect.

Liberals mugged by reality is always welcome news.

Moderate liberal James said...

Republicans are saying, What a terribly, terribly horribly LIBERAL and confrontational speech Obama gave. Ah, but look at this:
__________________

...what is being mostly overlooked is HOW MANY OF THE POLICIES AND VIEWPOING Obama articulated in his inaugural address ARE SUPPORTED BY MAJORITIES OF AMERICANS.

Chris Cillizza: Take Obama’s advocacy for gay rights, for example. (“Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law,” Obama said in his speech yesterday).
As it turns out, per the Dec. 2012 NBC/WSJ poll, a majority of Americans -- 51% -- favor gay marriage. That’s up from a mere 30% in 2004.

There’s also immigration reform. (“Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity.”)
The Jan. 2013 NBC/WSJ found another majority -- 52% -- supporting giving illegal immigrants the ability to apply for legal status.

And then there's his defense of entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare. (“These things do not sap our initiative; they strengthen us. They do not make us a nation of takers; they free us to take the risks that make this country great.”)
Polls overwhelmingly find that Americans support these programs.

One issue that Obama discussed yesterday -- stopping climate change -- is a topic that could be a harder political sell, although the NBC/WSJ poll hasn’t tested it in a long time. And it is possible, as the Washington Post's Dan Balz notes, that Obama's second term could be marked by overreach.

But it's also hard to argue that these “liberal” ideas and policies are somehow far outside the political mainstream.

As Politico writes, “The cultural changes that allowed Obama to be the first president to mention gay rights in an inaugural address are already widely accepted by the public or destined to be so soon AS A YOUNGER, MORE SOCIALLY LIBERAL GENERATION COMES OF AGE. The president’s promise to address climate change and his peroration on continuing ‘what those pioneers began’ on gender equality, gay rights, voting rights, immigration and gun control likewise illustrated just how much the White House is convinced that THE COUNTRY'S CULTURAL CENTER HAS MOVED.”

Obama’s 2nd inaugural address: 'Peace in our time'? Really, Mr. President?

The WTF moment for me in Obama's second inaugural address, delivered Monday at noon, was his use of the phrase "peace in our time." This came during his discussion of foreign policy, and in such circles, that phrase is a synonym for appeasement, especially of Hitler by Neville Chamberlain in September 1938. What signal does his using it send to Iran? I hope he was just using it to jerk Netanyahu's chain.

I also simply didn't understand what he meant by "a world without boundaries." But my immediate thought was, No, right now we need boundaries -- like those meant to keep Iran out of Syria and Pakistan out of Afghanistan.

So who said the adults were in charge?

Commonsense said...

The Significance of Obama’s Inaugural Address

President Obama’s inaugural address was eloquent and moving in parts. It was also deeply partisan and polarizing, something that is unusual for a day normally devoted to unity and common purpose.

But not in Barack Obama’s America. In his inaugural speech he did what he seemingly cannot keep himself from doing: portraying himself and his followers as Children of Light and portraying his opponents as Children of Darkness.

You are either with Obama–or you are with the forces of cruelty and bigotry. In Obama’s world, there is no middle ground. He is the Voice of Reason; those who oppose him are the voice of the mob. They are the ones who (to cite just one passage from his speech) mistake absolutism for principle, substitute spectacle for politics, and treat name-calling as reasoned debate.

In that sense, Obama is the perfect president for our current political culture. And for all of his self-perceived similarities with Abraham Lincoln, he is the antithesis of Lincoln when it comes to grace, a charitable spirit and a commitment to genuine reconciliation. Mr. Obama is, at his core, a divider. He seems to relish it, even when the moment calls for a temporary truce in our political wars.

Which leads me to my second point.

Mr. Obama’s speech was not a call to unity; it was a summons to his liberal base to fight–on global warming, for gay rights, for gun control, for renewable energy, and for a diminished American role in world affairs. And the president’s speech also signaled that he will oppose, with passion and demagoguery, anyone who attempts to reform our entitlement programs. He is fully at peace with running trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see. He not only won’t lift a finger to avoid America’s coming debt crisis; he will lacerate those who do.

ok libruhls...everyday in Duhmerica there are arguements and injuries. A dude stabbed after the Atlanta game the other night, countless others across our nation.

Yet...you pawns jumped on this incident IMMEDIATELY as another reason to encroach on MY FREEDOMS to own weaponry that is capable of defending myself in extreme cases. When, all it was was another routine act of violence that will NEVER be legislated out of existence here or anywhere else.

Dumbfugs.

An obvious attempt to find something in the speech to object to, no matter how you have to distort it.

Chamberlain naively announced that there would be "peace in our time" after he thought he had appeased Hitler.

Obama did not say that. He talks about what "peace in our time" WILL REQUIRE.
__________

As for using the phrase, "world without boundaries," Obama is not advocating a world without political boundaires; he is simply pointing out that the ECONOMY of our world, the global market, recognizes no boundaries.

Try again. :-)

"""And the president’s speech also signaled that he will oppose, with passion and demagoguery, anyone who attempts to reform our entitlement programs. He is fully at peace with running trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see. He not only won’t lift a finger to avoid America’s coming debt crisis; he will lacerate those who do."""

We've moved beyond the 'handwriting's on the wall' era.

We are now in motion to the abyss. Again, we can sustain this for quite a while yet...right up until we can't.

President Asshat will destroy those with money...through taxes and/or currency destruction. And the poor will still get poorer. Tsk tsk for them.

Good luck to future American's. If I were younger I really think I'd head elsewhere as this place will become more effed up by the year for the foreseeable future.

The term "Peace in out Time" especially in the context of foreign policy, is always synonymous with appeasement.

Obamaphiles can’t have it both ways.

Either, as they say, he’s the most brilliant speech writer ever who carefully crafts his texts to bring forward historical analogies — in which case he used the phrase deliberately which is frightening – or he’s way overblown and did it without realizing the significance.

Some choice.

Deliberately provocative or totally ignorant of history.

Grinning.

Mr. Obama’s speech was INDEED a call to unity; it was a summons to ALL AMAERICANS WHO AGREE WITH HIM TO FIGHT AGAINST global warming (WHICH A MAJORITY OF AMERICANS NOW BELIEVE IS MAN MADE), for gay rights (WHICH A MAJORITY NOW SUPPORT), for gun control (WHICH A MAJORITY ARE NOW IN FAVOR OF), for renewable energy (WANTED BY A MAJORITY), and for a SENSIBLE AND RESPONSIBLE American role in world affairs THAT DOES NOT INVOLVE US IN MAJOR COMMITMENTS OF "BOOTS ON THE GROUND" WHEN THESE ARE NOT NECESSARY.

The executive branch has no intention over the next four years of reforming — or, more correctly, saving from bankruptcy — our wasteful entitlement programs. Indeed, ObamaCare is a huge new entitlement heaved on to the taxpayers' backs.
Lady Thatcher warned that socialists "always run out of other people's money." The president has made it clear he is nowhere near to being finished pursuing collectivism in the name of individual freedom.

If you think that it's "routine" - it proves America is a violent country and you're okay with that.

Taking this kind of logic, we might as well not have any safety regulations of any kind, because, well, accidents are inevitable and enacting regulations infringes on some freedoms, ie: my freedom to drive my car and not get my clothes wrinkled by the seat belt.

It amazes me that people are calling for near-anarchy when they oppose gun regulations.

"Yawn, apparently there was enough porto-potties for 400,000 and they were more than adequate."

Even if it was 400K that's on par with what Bush got in 2005 and Clinton in 1997.

Common sense indicates that a democrat would get more turnout in Washington D.C. & environs than a republican.

I don't know why pulling it out and seeing whose is longer is so important with these crowds.

LBJ beats you all since over 1 million in 1965 is proportionally more impressive. He and Kennedy both filled stadiums too - Kennedy spoke to 80K at Los Angeles memorial Colisem, LBJ to 60K at memorial stadium in Austin. Really who cares?

Because liberals ALWAYS, ALWAYS overreach.

"Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

Just watched the screed from Wayne LeP from yesterday. Keep letting him out in public and allowing him to spew the incendiary words in your name. The house will be lost with 92% of Americans saying background checks should be completed on ALL transactions....Now the kansan shows up and defends guns rather than lives. The stupidity of the right runs deep supporting such silly tit for tat ......bad w, good BHO....your depth of knowledge on all subjects is just astounding.
