REPUBLICAN PARTY NEEDS A SHAKE UP
Former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson writes that Republican primary voters, party activists and party leaders "have a choice to make, ruthlessly clarified by recent events. They can take the path of Democrats in 1988, doubling down on a faltering ideology. Or they can follow the model of Democrats in 1992 and their own party in 2000, giving their nominee the leeway needed to oppose outworn or extreme ideas and to produce an agenda relevant to our time."

Things are looking BAD for the GOP.

Here's how BAD things look:

TEXAS GOP CHAIR SAYS STATE COULD BE A BATTLEGROUND
While many Republicans dismiss the idea that Texas could be competitive in 2016, Texas GOP Chairman Steve Munisteri tells Real Clear Politics that his state could become a battleground in the next presidential election, particularly if Hillary Clinton is the Democratic nominee.

Said Munisteri: "If she's the nominee, I would say that this is a 'lean Republican' state but not a 'solid Republican' state. I don't know anyone nationally who's scoffing at this. The national party leadership is aware and tells me they're taking it seriously."

Seven hundred thousand children will be dropped from Head Start. Six hundred thousand women and children will be dropped from aid programs. Meat won't be inspected. Seven thousand TSA workers will be laid off, customs workers too, and air traffic controllers. Lines at airports will be impossible. The Navy will slow down the building of an aircraft carrier. Troop readiness will be disrupted, weapons programs slowed or stalled, civilian contractors stiffed, uniformed first responders cut back.

Why is he doing all this? Because he has no desire or intention of cutting one dime from any budget. So he is doing everything he can to create a disaster where there is none. This is classic community organizer MO btw. We're going to get four more years of leadership by crisis creation because it has been his experience that that is how communities and groups are moved to act. Particularly the low information memebers of whatever group he is targeting.

He is likely to be seen by history as one of the worst leaders that office has ever seen. Great leadership does not do so by confrontation, division, derision, manipulation and deception. Poor leaders have to resort to that.

Agencies will have 120 days to implement changes. While those agencies are currently predicting doom, they will in reality face pressure to impose cuts in ways that minimize harm. Government unions won't let agency heads cut employees instead of fancy conference budgets. Moreover, this is a 2.5% cut in spending, not a government shutdown. Americans will continue to get their passports, cash their Social Security checks, and visit national parks.

What has to make the White House a tad nervous are the questions it is beginning to get from the savvier members of the press. Didn't you folks in the White House also agree to $1.2 trillion in sequester cuts? Why are you now changing the goal posts, asking for taxes? Are you really saying you can't find $85 billion in sensible cuts from a $3.8 trillion budget? Why not just ask the GOP for the flexibility to impose the cuts more wisely?

That last question will grow in prominence as the House GOP soon takes up legislation to continue funding the government. Republicans have vowed to lock the sequester cuts into that continuing resolution, though there is talk of including a provision that would give Mr. Obama more flexibility to administer the trims.

The White House has shown no interest in being given that authority. It prefers to campaign on Armageddon coming, and blame Republicans. But can it maintain that position if vulnerable Senate Democrats like North Carolina's Kay Hagan (whose state is getting hit by the defense sequester) start calling for a flexibility provision? Democratic frustration is already bubbling up against a White House that is so convinced of its campaigning brilliance that it has devoted no resources to mapping out a legislative fallback position.

That has some Democrats nervous. They understand that the GOP isn't budging. They are watching Republicans begin to define this battle on their own terms.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor on Thursday highlighted both government spending embarrassments and Mr. Obama's "false choices," noting that the president has the power to choose to "cut waste like smoking machines and EPA grants to foreign countries" rather than "degrade our military." The president, said Mr. Cantor, can "eliminate slush funds" rather than "let criminals run through the streets."

This is where the GOP needs and wants the fight to be—on big government, on Mr. Obama's spending addiction, on the drag of federal spending on the private economy. That debate—take note—is already a far cry from the endless media focus on Republican divisions and weakness that dominated the tax-cliff and payroll fights and led to GOP defeats.

It is an end, as the GOP sees it, to the Groundhog Day loop. And it is why the sequester is coming.

WASHINGTON -- The federal budget deficit will drop below $1 trillion for the first time in President Barack Obama's tenure in office, a new report said Tuesday.

The Congressional Budget Office analysis said the government will run a $845 billion deficit this year, a modest improvement compared to last year's $1.1 trillion shortfall but still enough red ink to require the government to borrow 24 cents of every dollar it spends.

The agency projected that the economy will grow just 1.4 percent this year if $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts take effect as scheduled March 1. Unemployment would average 8 percent. Obama wants to ease the cuts by replacing them with new tax revenue and alternative cuts, but a clash is looming with Republicans who insist that last month's tax increase on wealthier earners will be the last tax hike they permit.

The report predicted the deficit would dip to $430 billion by 2015, the lowest since the government posted a $459 billion deficit is former President George W. Bush's last year in office. That would be a relatively low 2.4 percent when measured against the size of the economy.

A good read:

The Electric Car Is an Abomination

Electric cars never really made any sense. They are cloaked in the sanctimony of the green movement, because they don't use nasty fossil fuels like gasoline. Instead, they use electricity, which is sent out through power lines from big power plants, which generate this electricity—how? Oh yes, by burning fossil fuels like oil, coal, and natural gas. This is known as the "long tailpipe," which goes from the car charging up in your garage all the way back to the smokestack of a coal-fired power plant. And don't forget, electric cars also have giant batteries made from nasty toxic metals like lithium and cobalt, the manufacture of which frontloads carbon dioxide emissions.

So the electric car was always more an exercise in green paternalism—it is the future, as selected for us by our betters—than a serious attempt to solve any real or imagined problem.

Like I said before, the market rejected this technology over 100 years ago and there hasn't been enough changes it believe it would be any different today.

hb laughs said...

Obama’s sequester deal-changer

The president and Lew had this wrong. My extensive reporting for my book “The Price of Politics” shows that the automatic spending cuts were initiated by the White House and were the brainchild of Lew and White House congressional relations chief Rob Nabors — probably the foremost experts on budget issues in the senior ranks of the federal government.

Obama personally approved of the plan for Lew and Nabors to propose the sequester to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). They did so at 2:30 p.m. July 27, 2011, according to interviews with two senior White House aides who were directly involved.

Nabors has told others that they checked with the president before going to see Reid. A mandatory sequester was the only action-forcing mechanism they could devise. Nabors has said, “We didn’t actually think it would be that hard to convince them” — Reid and the Republicans — to adopt the sequester. “It really was the only thing we had. There was not a lot of other options left on the table.”

Now of Obama was a Republican both doughboy and chicken-james would have said he lied.

Poor Rush. He is, in his words, ashamed of America. Because he, and you folks, have lost the war of ideas, the nation has been lost. Not because his ideas and beliefs are wrong, but because the American people have rejected his beliefs

There is a natural tendency among conservatives to believe they have the right to govern. And that the liberals should be nothing but a noisy minority they have to put up with. But after losing two general elections, with the prospects looking dim in the future, they begin to support concepts that would weaken the evil liberals that are contrary to our democratic history.

That is the reason they floated the concept of awarding electoral votes per district instead of the at large method of awarding all the votes to the candidate that won the state. Luckily that idea has been shot down so far. But I will not be surprised to see other ideas floated that will attempt to implement into law, the divine right of kings. That being conservative rule is the natural order of things.

The insurance mandate is so onerous for small firms that Stephen Caldeira, president of the International Franchise Association, predicts that "Many stores will have to cut worker hours out of necessity. It could be the difference between staying in business or going out of business." The franchise association says the average fast-food restaurant has profits of only about $50,000 to $100,000 and a margin of about 3.5%.

Because other federal employment regulations also kick in when a firm crosses the 50 worker threshold, employers are starting to cap payrolls at 49 full-time workers. These firms have come to be known as "49ers." Businesses that hire young and lower-skilled workers are also starting to put a ceiling on the work week of below 30 hours. These firms are the new "29ers." Part-time workers don't have to be offered insurance under ObamaCare.

Having already posted the information on facebook and Twitter the right of privacy threat went the way of the dodo bird. And seriously, the truth is the whole thing started when in response to a question from James on how often fully automatic weapons are used in crimes committed in the U.S..

The Floridiuuun posted a link to a crime, no longer available, that he claimed was committed by criminals with fully automatic weapons, ie AK-47's that had been illegally converted to fully automatic.

The story, and I read it at that time, made not such claim. He interpreted at that time that such weapons were used. Not from information in the story by law enforcement, but by comments made about how bullets were "sprayed".

When he again was asked to provide proof the weapons were converted, i.e. fully automatic, the usual song and dance routine he uses to avoid admitting an even minor error commenced.

He did his unusual routine of personal attacks and distortions of information provided that showed beyond doubt that his claims were incorrect. I then pointed out that is his method of denial. And I stated that he is morally incapable of admitting an error of any kind. He will compound his lies and then when called out by name he threatened legal action.

He is delusional.

Sure, mistakes will be made. But guess what folks? Bad judgement and management happen, in private industry and government. GM made some horrible decisions on brand lines and other issues going back to the 60's. But because of the size and what it means to the country, we kept it alive. But that's beside the point.

Some forms of renewable energy will be part of the future. And electricity will be one of those sources.

I have been doing some reading on Tesla, and it seems to be providing to a limited, well off market, a neat sports car. The biggest problems they have had are based on their inexperience in the use of suppliers, the costs involved, and similar problems. They will probably survive as a niche manufacturer.

Mensa Boy has one thing right, the problem with electrics is battery technology. And a bigger one is the use of rare earth metals in those we now make. They are expensive and often found in unstable parts of the world. But I have never been a fan, to this point, of pure electrics. Hybrids, both plug in and fuel only are probably going to be the main power source for alternative vehicles. Now if one of you geniuses can invent a battery that is quick to charge, highly efficient and does not use rare metals, you will make enough money to buy and sell Bill Gates several times over.

I'm ahead of all of you. I already have such a battery powering my fleet of cars.

Where is your engineering degree from?

Portly U

lol. It's not the governments job to give my money to Obumble's campaign bundlers.

Don'tcha wish Lincoln hadn't insisted on a national railway?

Expensive, and during the Civil War too.

Old Abe just gave all that money right away.

Pastor Chicken-James next sermon will be on humility.

Grinning here.

As the Volt experience has shown, government directed technology does not work.

You can build a bright shiny bobble and make a pretty speech on how the bright shiny bobble is the way of the future and even bribe people with incentives to by the bright shiny bobble.

But if that bright shiny bobble doesn't fill the need or is too expensive then people won't buy it.

You don't need to be an engineer to understand the auto industry. Mensa boy is a child in that area. What he reads on a few wingnut web sites is his entire background. I have been a car guy since he was still chasing wh@les.

JOURNO: OOPS, I STARTED THE HAGEL-HAMAS RUMORS
Dan Friedman explains how a made-up group he JOKED about became news
By Matt Cantor (Newser) – Ever wonder how unconfirmed rumors snowball into political news stories? At the New York Daily News, Dan Friedman offers an example—in which he was the unwitting source of the false story.

In the midst of Chuck Hagel's confirmation process, Friedman called a GOP aide to find out more about whether Hagel had given speeches to questionable organizations. As examples, he made up names like "Friends of Hamas" and "Junior League of Hezbollah."

"The names were so over-the-top, so linked to terrorism in the Middle East, that it was clear I was talking hypothetically and hyperbolically," Friedman writes.

The aide said he'd let Friedman know.

But the question itself went viral, with BREITBART NEWS* offering the headline "White House spox ducks question on 'Friends of Hamas.'"

Now, "I am, it seems, the creator of the Friends of Hamas myth," Friedman notes. "I erred in counting on confidentiality and the understanding that my example was farcical—and by assuming no one would print an unchecked rumor."

James, I saw that story early this week. I left it alone because I thought Mensa Boy or rat would post it because it included "The Friends of Hamas". And these people are so naive. But this one was too much even for them. Damn it

James New Leaf said...

And by the way, the word on the street is that the Hagel nomination WILL be ratified (even McCain says so), and now that has people asking, "Just what did the GOP gain from all their obstructionism on this?"

Governors Seek Discretion for Federal Money
"Governors of both parties said on Saturday that they knew federal budget cuts were coming, and they pleaded with President Obama and Congress to give them more discretion over the use of federal money so they could minimize the pain for their citizens," the New York Times reports.

"The governors, arriving here for the winter meeting of the National Governors Association, said that the automatic across-the-board cuts in federal spending that are scheduled to begin at the end of the week, were creating havoc, threatening jobs and sapping economic growth in their states."

The Republicans will end up getting most of the blame. It does not matter if the President should share the blame. Most of the public has a very negative view of them today. Because they are seen as unwilling to compromise on anything.

200th post on the thread.

Busy day tomorrow. Will miss the Daytona 500. Someone tell Mensa Boy what it is please. Our self-declared expert probably does not know what it is.
